 
The
Castlewood High School Middle School Level of FBLA presented two
check for a total of $2,326.76 to two worth-while causes at the
school. Mr. Kiser accepted a check for $2,000 to be used for the new
school marquee. Several activities are being coordinated by the FBLA
with the hopes that the sign will be in place by spring 2012. A
check was also presented to the chairpersons for the FBLA State
Service Project, Project ASK for childhood cancer.
The students
earned the money and earned about small business operations through
a business they called Devil's Delight. A report of their
project will be submitted to FBLA competition at the end of this
month.
Breast Cancer Awareness Donation

Sandy
Franklin from the Southwest Cancer Center located in Norton,
Virginia, accepts a donation from Castlewood High School’s Andrea
Layton. Layton served as co-chairperson with Jeremiah Statzer to
raise money and awareness concerning breast cancer. During the month
of October the team which included members of the Future Business
Leaders of America, Team Estonia, and many other student volunteers,
sold hearts which were displayed on a tree in the school’s foyer,
provided informational announcements during morning school
announcements, and coordinated an information booth at a home
volleyball game. In addition to a check for $426.00, students
presented a banner displaying all the hearts purchased during the
fundraiser to Ms. Franklin. The banner will be on display at the
Southwest Cancer Center in the chemotherapy room. All money
collected will be used locally for patient comfort.

CHS Students Recognized at Barter Theatre
Bryce
Kilgore has been named a finalist and Corey France has been named a
semi-finalist in the annual Young Playwrights Festival sponsored by
the Barter Theatre. Bryce’s “An Antagonistic Romance” survived
three rounds of judging, Corey’s “What are the Odds?” lasted
throughout two rounds, and both plays were among 140+ entries from
Virginia and Tennessee. Corey and Bryce were recognized at the
Barter Theatre on Monday, November 7th.
Afterschool Ice Skating Field Trip

The
Castlewood High School 21st Century Reach Afterschool
Program enjoyed an evening at the Johnson Control Ice Rink located
at the Bristol International Speedway. Continuing a tradition
started by former Reach After School coordinator Jane Carter,
students who had participated in the program during the first
semester were treated to dinner at McDonalds and an evening of ice
skating. Several students who had participated in previous trips to
the rink expressed excitement that their skating skills are
improving!

Hensdill
Assists Students With Job Interviews

Mrs. Crabtree’s class has just completed a unit on
career research and preparing resumes. Mrs. Hendsill worked with
students to interview and review their resumes. Students were
encouraged to dress appropriately for an interview and prepare
themselves for questions and answers related to the interview. Mrs.
Hensdill serves as a Virginia State Board member for the FBLA
Foundation. The Virginia Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta
Lambda, Inc., is an organization for secondary (FBLA) and post-secondary
(PBL) students enrolled in business classes or those interested in the
field of business. FBLA-PBL members focus on three major areas: service
to school and community; developing competent, aggressive leadership
skills; and promoting academic excellence.

Arts
Depot Showcasing Castlewood High Student
Father and
stepdaughter, Darris Stanley, Jr. and Makayla Hale will present a
combined art exhibit now through February 25 at the Arts Depot in
Abingdon, Virginia. Makayla Hale is a 16 years old and attends
Castlewood High School. Like her stepfather, she grew up drawing with
whatever materials she could find. Makayla is currently in her second
year of arts at CHS. Although she enjoys all art, she says “working in
pencil is my favorite media…I tend to focus on people and animals to
inspire me.” Makayla says her stepdad fuels her passion in art as she
watches the projects he completes. She also notes that each year since
she was four years old she has won when exhibiting art at the Russell
County Fair held in Castlewood, Virginia.
The Depot
Artists Association is a non-profit volunteer organization that operates
the Arts Depot and is dedicated to promoting arts in the community and
features the region’s artists. The Arts Depots is located in the
historic Depot Square are of downtown Abingdon, Virginia. The gallery
and artists’ studios are open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, January
through March from 11 a.m until 3 p.m. or by appointment. There is no
admission charge.
Afterschool Celebrate the
Holiday Season!

Mrs. Ashley Burke, Science
teacher at Castlewood High School is shown assisting students in the 21st
Century Reach After School program as they create Borax© Snowflakes.
Students enjoyed watching the snowflakes crystallize over a two day
period. In addition, to snowflakes, participants celebrated the holiday
season with pizza, bingo, prizes, and holiday cake. The 21st
Century After School program begins their second semester sessions on
Monday, January 9.

the Holiday Season!

Castlewood High School Future
Business Leaders of America students Erika Hubbard, Mikayla McCoy,
Jasmine Sizemore, and Samantha Salyer are shown as they prepare to
deliver Christmas ornaments. The FBLA hand makes a Christmas ornament
for faculty, administration, support staff and bus drivers each
Christmas and presents the ornament to give thanks for all they do for
Castlewood High School. This year, the group selected a Santa ornament
constructed with clear plastic balls, floor wax, glitter, miniature
buttons, raffia, and ribbon. A thank you card was then personalized for
the eighty-four ornaments crafted by the students.
