Exemption for the Disabled and Senior Citizens of Russell County

If you are totally disabled or over the age of 65 there is an exemption on the Real Estate taxes in Russell County. There are two qualifications that must be met before eligibility is determined:

1.  The annual household income ( that would include anyone that lives in the home and draws any type of income) cannot exceed $27,000.00

2.  The total Net worth cannot exceed $75,000.00 ( This would include any money in the bank in either savings or checking accounts, money invested in anything, and any other real estate NOT including the house and one acre of land on which you live.)

If you meet the two previous conditions there is an application that must be obtained from the Commissioner of the Revenue office. These must be filed every year by March 1 of that tax year.  If you are under 65 you must provide proof of your disability. ( A copy of your award letter or something from the doctor stating that you are totally disabled.)

If all the above requirements are met, this exemption will pay $150.00 of your Real Estate taxes, anything over that is the taxpayer's responsibility.

The Russell County COR goes out every Spring, as announced, to each community to accept new applications and renew applicants that may not be able to come the court house to do so.
