Frequently asked questions on Personal Property
1. What can I do if I no longer own a vehicle?
Make sure the title is changed at DMV and you can notify the Commissioner's office. The Commissioner's Office pulls all information down from DMV as to what is titled and what needs to be taxed.
2. What if I don't have the vehicle tagged, do I still have to pay taxes on it?
If a vehicle is titled it is taxed whether it is on the road or not; however, the value may be adjusted according to the year of the vehicle and condition.
3. Are singlewides considered real estate or personal property?
They are considered personal property because they are mobile and have a title.
4. Are boats taxed?
Boats and jet skies are taxed. We receive a list of boats from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries every year as to the boats that are registered in Russell County. When a boat is sold, the Commissioner's office needs to be notified by the taxpayer so that it can be removed from the tax roll.
5. If I sell a vehicle during the year do I have to pay the entire year's taxes?
Russell County doesn't prorate. That means that whatever a taxpayer owns on January 1 of the tax year, that is what they are taxed with regardless of the amount of time the vehicle is kept or garaged in Russell county.
