May is Mental Health Awareness Month. May 9, 2024, has been selected as the date for Virginia to recognize Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day (CMHAD). The goal of this day is to raise awareness of the importance of every child’s mental health. Intentionally engaging in activities that boost mental health should be prioritized as much as routine physical care. Using resources from the Virginia Department of Education, LES will engage students in activities designed to improve mental health. Lexia is proud to partner with families and the Virginia Department of Education to help fulfill the state's ALL In Tutoring! Lexia is excited to announce that they are now offering information sessions specifically designed for Virginia families. In these sessions, parents and families can expect to learn how Lexia will accelerate their child’s literacy growth and how they can be ALL in with at-home strategies to support their learner! These information sessions will be held May 7, 14, 21, and 28 and will be the Core5 sessions for our school. Spring Picture Day at LES will be on Friday, April 12. Order forms have been sent home with students. The pictures are prepaid, so please either send money with the order form or pay online prior to Friday.

There will be no after-school on Monday, April 8, 2024.

Gifted students had the privilege of seeing the Richmond Ballet, the state ballet of Virginia as they performed Swan Lake. This was an excellent opportunity for our gifted students. Thanks to Olivia Ratliff for reaching out to invite us. #pioneerpower

The 2nd Grade Field Trip that was scheduled for tomorrow, April 4, has been postponed. The new date is April 24.

LES had our 1st Annual Career Fair for 3rd and 4th grade students today. Career exploration is part of our curriculum, so Ms. Andie Meade and Mrs. Penny Bailey planned this event to help our students learn about a variety of careers. Several community members came and shared their careers with our students. The Russell County Career and Technology Center collaborated with us and students from many of the programs there came and talked with students about their specific program. Today was a great success. Our students now have first hand knowledge on so many different career options as they look toward their future! Thanks to everyone who shared their expertise with our students. #pioneerpower

Russell County Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 due to the Presidential Primary Election.

Kyle Buckland is a landscape painter/artist based in Abingdon, Virginia. At one of his recent fundraisers, collectors were given the opportunity to select a school to receive a donated painting for every purchase they made. Thanks to the Chafin Vance family for choosing us to receive two pieces of art to display at LES.

Russell County Public Schools will operate virtually on Friday, January 19, 2024.

Congratulations to CHS, LHS, LPS, and HHS on the award of new 21st Century Community Learning Centers three-year grants. With these awards and four grants awarded last school year, Russell County Public Schools now has 21CCLC grants serving each of our schools. The start date for Morning Remediation and After School activities is Monday, September 11, 2023. After School Students should complete a registration form and make sure they have a RCPS Health Form on file for field trip adventures! Morning Remediation will be held from 7:30 am-8:30 am Monday through Friday. After School is scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of each week from 3:30-6:00. An after-school snack and transportation are provided for all participants. See your school's 21CCLC Site Coordinator for transportation details. Highly qualified instructions will guide the students through remediation, homework help, one-on-one tutoring, time in tech labs, learning through enrichment, sessions with a career focus, fitness, healthy cooking, and many other valuable life skills! Check out each school's monthly calendar of events posted on their school websites and social media, in the school's main office, and also sent home with students!
