Bandy & Cole

HONAKER — A Region 1D Football Championship and a 13-1 record in the 2023 season continues to pay dividends for the Honaker Tigers. Two all-state performers signed recently to continue to play DII football at the collegiate level at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

Lineman Tyler Cole and wide receiver Parker Bandy inked to play this fall for the Cavaliers.

“This means a lot to me to have the opportunity to play at the next level,” Cole said. “I want to thank my parents for helping me to push myself. I’ve been playing football since I was four years old and I’ve never lost my love for it. I’ve always loved hitting, lifting, grinding, and doing cardio. I’ve never given up on football. Hopefully, Parker and I can do great things.”

Things are on the upswing for the football Cavs. Gary Bass was named in December to take over the UVA-Wise football program as head coach, bringing 17 years of coaching experience to UVA-Wise, including 14 at the NCAA Division II level. Bass was pleased to sign the two Tigers.

“Getting local area talent that has demonstrated the ability to play at a high level is huge as we move forward,” stated Bass. “We want to keep local area talent here at home.”
