Clay, Funk take top Class 1 awards 

Eastside senior guard Taylor Clay has been chosen by the Virginia High School League as the Class 1 player of the year after leading the Spartans to the first state championship in school history.

In addition, Terri Anne Hill Funk was chosen as coach of the year among Class 1 teams in Virginia.

Clay was joined on the first team by Tailor Nolley and Alayna McNulty from Honaker and George Wythe’s Makaylan Luttrell.

Second team honorees includes Ella Rasnake from Council, Sarah Williams from J.I. Burton and George Wythe’s Amarrah Carter-Bennett.

Keene claims Class 1 first team honors 

Honaker senior Keyton Keene has been chosen to the Virginia High School League all-state first team.

Class 1 state champion Lancaster swept the top awards, with Troy Henderson as player of year and Dwayne Pinn as top coach.

Area second team honorees include Jonah Looney from Grundy, Reed Kirtner from George Wythe and Patrick’s Cole Caywood.
