SWVA Works Young Adult Program Spotlight
When Gracie graduated from Honaker High School, she knew she wanted a career in law enforcement. She met with SWVA Works Workforce Specialist Lisa Hubbard to discuss her options. Lisa set up an internship for Gracie at the Russell County Sheriff’s Department for the summer. Gracie would work for 3 months and get a close-up look at what a law enforcement career would include. While enrolled, she got her learner’s permit and her driver’s license.
After she completed the summer internship program, she began looking for work, and in late fall, she was hired by the Keen Mountain Correctional Center as a Corrections Officer. She did not expect this opportunity to come so quickly, but after being hired, she completed the Department of Corrections Academy training to become a Licensed Corrections Officer.
Gracie is thankful for the services she received under the SWVA Works program and says, “The program opened doors that otherwise would have remained closed, providing me with the training, resources, and support needed to begin working in a professional field that I am passionate about. Lisa went above and beyond to ensure that I received the guidance and encouragement that I needed.
Through this experience, I have been able to gain valuable skills, build confidence, and take the first steps in what I hope will be a long and successful career in public service. To anyone in our community who is looking for a path forward, I encourage you to explore the opportunities offered by the Southwest Virginia Workforce Program. It just might change your life, too.”
Congratulations Gracie! We are so proud of you.
