In a match-up between girls basketball teams tied for first place in their respective districts, the Honaker Tigers earned a 57-51 triumph over the Union Bears on Wednesday.

Honaker (9-5) is tied for first place with Chilhowie in the Class 1 Hogoheegee District, while Union (8-5) has one league loss along with Wise County Central and Ridgeview in the Class 2 Mountain 7 District.

Neither team led by more than seven points on Wednesday as there were 10 ties and five lead changes. The teams combined for 44 turnovers and 30 steals.

Carey Keene had 15 points, nine rebounds and six steals for Honaker, while Julianna Farmer (22 points, five rebounds, five steals) and Cadence Rose (seven points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals) also played well.

“I was super proud of these girls tonight,” said Honaker coach Misty Davis Miller. “The whole team contributed and played hard.”
