GRUNDY, Va. – It turns out that Carey Keene is still keen on producing those postseason masterpieces.
The Honaker senior had 18 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Tigers took a 47-44 overtime triumph over the Twin Springs Titans on Friday in the semifinals of the VHSL Region 1D girls basketball tournament at Riverview Elementary/Middle School.
Honaker (21-5) clinched a state tournament berth and faces Grundy (17-7) today at 5 p.m. in Buchanan County as the Tigers try to secure their second straight regional championship.
Keene played a major role in making that happen.
“She loves big moments and takes care of business,” said Honaker coach Misty Davis Miller.
A year ago, Keene collected nine points, seven rebounds and three steals in Honaker’s win over Twin Springs in the regional semifinals and the following day hit five 3-pointers as part of a 21-point performance in the title game against J.I. Burton.
She was back at it again on Friday.
Just call her Carey “Clutch” Keene.
